Cordele City Commission swears in three commissioners; Jay Wesley Rainey elected mayor

Vice Chairman Wes Lee Rainey called the Cordele City Commission—s organizational meeting to order on Jan. 6 and opened with an invocation before the body administered oaths to newly elected commissioners.
Retired Judge Sims administered the oath to Christopher B. Finn, who affirmed the oath of office and thanked attendees. Judge Rusty Wright swore in George S. (George Singleton), and an individual recorded in the minutes as Joseph Jane Wright also took the oath and addressed the assembly.
Following the oath ceremonies, commissioners nominated and elected Jay Wesley Rainey as mayor. The commission also named a mayor pro tem (Shepard). After his election, Mayor Rainey said he was honored to be chosen by his colleagues and pledged to "add stability to the city and respect our department heads, city manager and city attorney" as the commission works to be business-friendly and move the city forward.
The swearing-in and election took place during a brief organizational session; the regular meeting convened shortly afterward in the city courtroom. The ceremonial portion included remarks from the newly sworn commissioners about their commitment to address city challenges and work with residents and staff.
The commission said it will meet again for regular business and scheduled a work session for Jan. 20 to review upcoming projects and orientation items for the new commissioners.
