The Hobart City Redevelopment Commission voted to increase the 2027 education and workforce training grant allocation from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a requested revision to the Maryville School construction-trades project.
Commissioner Miguel introduced the item and said the board had recommended raising the available amount at a prior special meeting. The motion to raise the 2027 grant ceiling was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Staff then presented a letter from Maryville School Corporation describing a scope change for the previously approved grant: instead of installing eight outdoor food pantry boxes, the construction-trades students will design, build and install eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets (one for each community school, including John Wood). The letter, written on behalf of Terrell Taylor, construction-trades instructor at Maryville High School, said the indoor units will protect donated food and supplies from winter weather and vandalism, allow staff to monitor distribution and provide students with hands-on construction experience.
A staff member who had communicated with the Maryville contacts told the board the revised approach "is stronger than the one they originally submitted" and reduces liability and spoilage. Commissioners asked whether the scope change affected the previously approved grant budget; staff said the revised approach will be completed within the originally approved budget.
The commission moved and approved a motion to accept the revision of Maryville's application as stated in the submitted letter and to increase the 2027 grant allocation to $50,000. No dissent was recorded.
What's next: staff will note the scope change in grant records and proceed with the project under the revised plan.
