Saugatuck council approves application process to fill vacant seat

The Saugatuck City Council on Sept. 26 approved a process to fill the council seat vacated on Sept. 24 by Logan White, setting an application deadline of Oct. 11 and scheduling a special meeting for Oct. 17 to select a replacement.
City Manager Cummins recommended that the council accept applications that include a board/commission application form, cover letter, resume and written answers to five questions used in the city’s 2019 vacancy process. Staff said applicants could be invited to give 5–7 minute presentations, or the council could instead conduct formal 30–45 minute interviews. The staff recommendation also called for notice to be shared via an e-mail blast, social media and the Commercial Record.
The proposed timeline adopted by motion states that notice would be released Sept. 26, the application deadline would be Oct. 11 at 5 p.m., and the council would meet in a special session on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. to review materials and select an appointee. Councilmember Muncey moved the motion; Councilmember Gardner seconded it. The motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.
Councilmember Gardner said the council should “be focused on identifying applicants that will be in line with what the constituents voted on back in the election of 2023 when voting in Logan White,” framing the appointment as an opportunity to find someone whose positions align with those of the departing member. Councilmember Anderson noted that in 2023 there were three candidates for three seats when Logan White was elected. Councilmember Muncey thanked staff for organizing the special meeting quickly.
City Clerk Jamie Wolters will accept application materials and the council packet for the Oct. 17 meeting will include applicants’ materials for public review, per the motion. The city charter requirement to fill the vacancy within 30 days was cited by staff during the presentation. No public comment was recorded on the agenda item during the meeting.
The council adjourned at 9:24 a.m. after approving the selection process.
