The board approved the district’s 2026–27 at‑risk (dropout prevention) plan after staff summarized key elements of a 23‑page document that defines identification criteria, interventions and funding strategies.
Plan scope: The plan breaks risk identification into building‑level indicators (attendance patterns, lack of extracurricular involvement, academic marks such as two or more years below benchmarks) and environmental factors (homelessness, socioeconomic status, disaster impacts). Interventions include credit recovery and summer programs for high‑school students, literacy programming for elementary students, targeted intervention teams, and counseling supports.
Funding and coding: District finance staff explained that MAS (Modified Supplemental Assistance) and other categorical funding used to support at‑risk services are levied locally; "that funding is actually property tax money," a district finance official said. The board was told that MAS requires appropriate coding and that unspent MAS allocations in prior years can reduce future allowable levies if not spent as required. The board approved the plan and staff said they will file the MAS request and a required public hearing schedule to enable FY27 funding.
Next steps: Staff will submit the MAS request and prepare the budget coding to reflect counselors and other positions included under the plan. The board’s approval fulfills the plan approval requirement ahead of the request for funding.
