Malden' — The Malden Human Resources Committee on Thursday approved updated job descriptions and voted to hire a full‑time Deputy City Clerk after discussing a 29‑hour per week part‑time option.
City Administrator and Utility Director Jeff Mitchell presented proposed updates to job classifications and recommended adding a part‑time Deputy Clerk (29 hours per week) as an option while noting the Board could opt to keep the position full‑time. Committee members raised concerns about coverage for vacations and sick leave, training and retention, and the limited savings tied to part‑time staffing.
The motion, as recorded in the minutes, "to approve the updated job description for the Deputy City Clerk position (Part‑time) and to hire a full‑time Deputy City Clerk" was made by Committee Member Rose Downs and seconded by Committee Member Jessica Carpenter; it passed unanimously, 7-0. The recorded yes votes were Committee Members Harold Jones, Casen Coleman, Lynnette Jenkins, Jessica Carpenter, Bindy Grant, Clark Duckett and Rose Downs.
Mitchell also proposed updating the position held by an employee identified in the minutes as Sharon to add Human Resources responsibilities in addition to City and BPW accounts receivable and Deputy City Collector duties. He recommended raising the salary range maximum to $26.50 per hour to allow a pay increase to $24.00 per hour, described in the minutes as matching the City Clerk salary level. Committee Member Rose Downs moved to approve the updated job description and maximum salary change and to forward the item to the City Council for final consideration; Committee Member Carpenter seconded and the motion passed 7-0.
The committee did not record a last name for Sharon in the minutes; the employee's current duties are listed in the record but the minutes do not specify other identifying information. The committee forwarded the personnel changes to the full City Council for final action.
