Wisner requests return of coverage; Akron council approves fire hydrotesting, training and police vehicle purchases

During public comment at its Dec. 16 meeting, Wade MacFarlane, representing Wisner Township, asked the Village of Akron to return sections of Wisner to Akron Fire Department coverage, saying Akron would provide faster response times and noting a March renewal deadline for coverage. "It just makes sense because Akron will have a faster response time because they are closer to the area of coverage," MacFarlane said. Council member R. Huizar said the council was not opposed to the idea.
The council also handled several public-safety items on the agenda. A police department representative reported the town remains calm and requested new badges and discussion about a new Department of Public Works building; the department presented two tire quotes for its Explorer ($1,000 and $633.60). T. Nusz moved to accept the $633.60 quote from Pomps Tire (Flint) and the motion passed with four votes in favor; D. Meyer did not vote.
Fire department business included scheduling hydrogen sulfide training with Fairgrove on Jan. 26, 2026, a CPR/AED refresher Feb. 23, 2026, a planned application for a Firehouse Subs grant for an extractor washer and dryer, and a request to hydrotest 20 SCBA bottles at a cost of $1,300. The council approved the hydrotesting after a motion from M. Strasz supported by T. Nusz (5-0).
Separately, the council opened sealed bids for a 2010 Dodge Charger and accepted a high sealed bid of $2,500 from Stephan Zarniak; the minutes note the vehicle's blue-book value at nearly $4,000.
The council recorded these operational approvals in the minutes; no formal action on Wisner Township's coverage request was recorded beyond the public comment and a council expression of being "not opposed."
