Akron council pauses winter water shutoffs through March to avoid pipe damage

The Village of Akron council voted unanimously Dec. 16 to suspend water service shutoffs during the winter months of December through March to reduce the risk of frozen-ground damage to aging service lines.

T. Nusz, council member, proposed the temporary pause, saying shutting off service in the cold months can lead to broken pipes when the ground freezes and cause substantial repair work for the Department of Public Works. The motion, seconded by T. Tait, passed 5-0.

The change is aimed at avoiding residential hardship for customers who rely on water for heating systems and preventing infrastructure failures the council said would create larger repair bills for the village. The record of the vote shows R. Huizar, M. Strasz, T. Nusz, D. Meyer and T. Tait voted in favor.

Clerk Charlynn Wilson recorded the action; the council did not specify a sunset date beyond the March end nor outline new enforcement steps for customers who fall behind on payments during the pause. Officials said turn-off hang tags may still be issued to document unpaid utility accounts, but actual winter shutoffs will not be carried out during the four-month period.
