Middlefield Park Commission approves June–August summer camp with part‑time option and counselor rules

The Middlefield Park and Recreation Commission on April 9 approved a comprehensive summer camp program slated for June 22–Aug. 14, including tuition rates, staffing requirements and registration rules.
Director Mary Farnsworth presented the plan, which sets full-time (Monday–Friday) tuition at $150 per week for residents and $175 per week for nonresidents, and a part-time option (W, Th, F) at $100 for residents and $125 for nonresidents. Camp hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with before-care from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and after-care from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. added for $5 per day for residents and $8 per day for nonresidents; before/after care must be purchased in weekly increments.
The commission set staffing expectations: a designated camp director and a camp nurse, a minimum counselor age of 16, and a goal that 80% of staff be age 18 or older. The program will offer two counselors-in-training tiers (CIT 1 for entering 7th–8th graders with a fee; CIT 2 for entering 9th–10th graders at no charge). Mary said she has received interest from UConn students and is recruiting for the director and camp nurse positions.
Registration will be handled through the town’s Rec Desk platform. A $25 nonrefundable deposit will be due at registration, with the remaining balance required before camp begins. The commission agreed there would be no additional discounts beyond scholarships for income-based need; weekly swim sessions at Lake Beseck and activities at Peckham Park via bus will be included in tuition, and one major field trip may be offered for an extra fee. Mary was asked to confirm facility availability with Regional School District 13 and to return with mowing bid and staffing details.
Jessica Poetzsch moved to approve the summer camp plan; Chris Hurlburt seconded and the motion passed unanimously by members present. The commission directed Mary Farnsworth to post the program and registration information to Rec Desk and prepare flyers for review.
The commission asked staff to explore offering swim lessons as an add-on and to present staffing plans at the next meeting.
