Pellston council hires village attorney, adopts fire protection ordinance and approves 2025 millage

At its May 12 meeting the Village of Pellston council approved several administrative and fiscal actions.
The council voted to engage attorney Shaynee Fanara as the Village attorney at a rate of $200 per hour. The hire was made by motion and recorded as carried in the minutes.
Council also passed a fire protection ordinance under Michigan Compiled Laws MCL 41.806a, to be effective for all of 2025 and forward, as recorded in the minutes. The motion was made and seconded and carried as recorded.
On fiscal matters, the council approved the 2025 tax rate request at an 8.8432 millage rate. The council also approved bills totaling $67,985.73. Council discussed storm-related costs incurred by the village and fire department from a recent ice storm; President Gillett said those costs were submitted to FEMA and the state for possible reimbursement and thanked staff for coordinating the paperwork.
Other items recorded in committee reports included Fire Chief Randy Bricker reporting heavy call volumes during the ice storm and a note that the department will award 11 scholarships of $2,000 each at the Pellston Schools awards night; Recreation reported that the DNR cleared the Trail Head project to go out for bids; and Memorial Day ceremony plans were set for May 26 at noon.
