Story County applies for $13,200 SWAP grant to fund 10 rural recycling drop-off sites

The Story County Board of Supervisors approved submitting an application to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Solid Waste Alternatives Program (SWAP) for $13,200 to fund ten recycling drop-off sites in unincorporated areas.
Planning and Development Director Leanne Harter described the proposal, saying funds would pay for containers, security cameras, privacy fencing and resident outreach. Harter provided details on the ten sites during the discussion and said the application is due July 1, 2026. Facilities Management Director Joby Brogden noted there have been verbal commitments from several cities to support the effort.
Supervisor Lisa Heddens moved to approve submission of the SWAP application; Supervisor Latifah Faisal seconded and the motion passed unanimously on a roll-call vote.
