The Village of Sanford council voted unanimously April 14 to pay the Michigan Department of Natural Resources $11,150 for a 35.99-acre parcel east of Porte Park and approved a separate $3,500 donation to the Sanford Historical Society.
The land purchase followed an appraisal and an offer from the DNR to sell the parcel at 25 percent of appraisal value. Carl Hamann moved to buy the property; Marcus Thrush seconded, and the motion carried with votes from Leah Ziems, Marcus Thrush, Don Whaley, Carl Hamann and Village President Dolores Porte.
Earlier in the meeting Chuck Dinsmore of the Sanford Historical Commission presented a verbal FY25/26 budget request for the Sanford Historical Society. On a motion by Marcus Thrush and a second from Don Whaley, the council approved the requested $3,500 contribution.
Treasurer Travis Raymond presented monthly financial statements and the council approved bills totaling $34,219.53 on a motion by Carl Hamann, seconded by Don Whaley. The council also approved the March 10 and March 27, 2025 meeting minutes; both motions passed unanimously.
Department reports were routine. Liquor inspector Robert McNett reported, “All is well, nothing to report.” Electrical inspector Tom Chritz reported one permit for $187; plumbing and mechanical inspections totaled two permits for $359; building inspections reported no new permits. Water District #1 representatives reported no issues.
The meeting closed after miscellaneous council reports and public-safety and infrastructure updates; council adjourned at 8:04 p.m.
Next steps: the DNR purchase and the Historical Society donation were recorded as approved; any required closing steps for the land purchase and SHS funding will proceed according to village procedures.
