Commissioners approve lease-purchase for rubber-tire machine, discuss five-year leases for chip spreader and distributor

Roads staff told the court that a rubber-tire machine critical to completing a road project had failed and remained in Lubbock for repairs for seven weeks. The machine was rebuilt in 2016 at a cost of about $160,000; staff said replacement lead time would be 20 to 25 weeks and estimated a lease-purchase payment on the order of $30,000 per year.
A commissioner moved to approve a lease-purchase to obtain the replacement unit so roadwork can continue. The motion passed on a voice vote.
The road superintendent also urged the court to consider a five-year lease for a new chip spreader and distributor because the county's current units are aging, parts are difficult to source, and contracting out seal-coating is cost‑prohibitive. Commissioners discussed trade-in and resale options and asked staff to obtain lease pricing and present formal agreements prior to final contract approval.
