Commissioners approve RFP process to restore historic courthouse gazebo ahead of 150th celebration

Members of the court and community speakers described the county courthouse gazebo as structurally deteriorated, with rot around posts, settling of up to six inches at one end, caving ceiling elements, and failing cladding. Community members said the gazebo is a central gathering point downtown and that repairs are desired before the planned Aug. 21 150th celebration.
Court discussion considered three paths: full restoration, teardown and rebuild, or a rebuild using treated lumber with modern detailing to ensure longevity. One speaker noted that previous attempts to level and underpin the structure had not provided a lasting solution.
The court directed staff to prepare a scope of work and issue requests for proposals (RFPs) so bidders can quote restoration and rebuilding alternatives. A commissioner noted potential recusal and said if they submit a bid they will follow procurement rules and file appropriate paperwork.
Staff will return with RFPs and options for the court to select the preferred approach and timeline; the court asked to keep community groups consulted and to include the project details in the commemorative program if the work is completed in time.
