Perry council approves appointment, discontinues community award and reviews local updates

At its March 20 meeting, the Perry City Council approved Mayor Susan J. Perry — The Perry City Council conducted routine business and heard community updates at its March 20 meeting at the Perry Community Building.
Mayor Susan J. Hammond appointed Melissa Whitson to the Zoning Board of Appeals with a term expiring in July 2027; Councilmember Bob Porter moved to approve the appointment, Councilmember Kamal Ghazi seconded, and the motion carried with all yes votes.
Councilmember Mike Connell moved to discontinue the Ross DeLau Put Your Best Face Forward/Perry’s Pride Award; Mayor Pro-Tem Larry Lambert seconded and the council voted unanimously to end the program.
The council approved the presented bills and authorized payment on a motion by Bob Porter, seconded by Mike Connell. The minutes record all the procedural motions — adoption of the agenda and approval of the March 6 meeting minutes — passed without opposition.
During Mayor’s reports, Hammond said the sale of the MacQueen House lot on Madison Street is in progress: the purchase agreement has been signed and paperwork was sent to the title company on March 20. She also said she requested an updated Consumers Energy quote for 14 light poles on Lansing Road that would include installation.
During preapproved reports, Dean Thatcher and Jerry Lincoln of the Greater Laingsburg Recyclers told the council their organization is a 501(c)(3), described items they accept and volunteer support, and said about 82% of facility users come from Shiawassee County; they noted Laingsburg Public Schools owns the property and that the building was financed with grants and municipal donations.
County Commissioner Matthew Shepherd reported during public comment that the county approved new equipment for the sheriff’s department and that related bills were paid. Hazel Stone, Perry FFA’s 2024–2025 chapter president, gave an FFA update and handed the council a flyer inviting members to the chapter’s Student Work Auction fundraiser.
Agenda items listed for the next council meeting include a proposed SSESA pay-per-meeting increase, a presentation from PPS Superintendent Lori Haven, discussion of a South M-52 property that is for sale, and announcements about community yard sales and spring clean-up dates. The council adjourned at 8:12 p.m.
