Pentwater council narrowly approves Antler Bar dumpster license after recusal request

The Pentwater Village Council on July 15 approved a licensing agreement permitting the Antler Bar to keep a dumpster behind 327 S. Hancock Street in an enclosure provided by the business for $100 per month; the license must be removed at the bar’s expense when the property is sold.

The motion to approve the agreement was made by Don Palmer and passed by a 4-3 vote. Heather Douglas, a resident at 818 First Street, asked the council to “recuse” President Jeff Hodges from voting on the Antler Bar matter during public comment. The council did not take separate action on recusal during the meeting and proceeded to vote on the licensing agreement.

Supporters said the arrangement provides a defined placement for the dumpster and requires the Antler Bar to enclose and remove it when the property changes hands. Opponents raised concerns about leasing village property to a private business and whether that sets an undesirable precedent; Wear Township Supervisor Larry Doran later warned municipal contracts with private businesses are risky, advising caution.
