Brooklyn schools update HVAC and facilities plans; board reinstates March 6 as student day

The Brooklyn Board of Education received updates Feb. 25 on planned HVAC work and ongoing facilities repairs and agreed to a calendar change to make up missed school days.
Superintendent Raynor said Service Station completed snow removal around the district’s above‑ground oil tank and that crews are replacing piping from the new tank to the boiler room as weather permits. Facilities lead Mr. Barrette visited EASTCONN sites to review dishwasher units and the district is collecting generator quotes from four vendors, including one Caterpillar‑brand vendor recommended by Building Committee member Matt Allen. Raynor said a rental generator performed successfully during the recent storm.
On the HVAC project, Raynor said the Building Committee will meet March 2, 2026. The Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance are scheduled to review the district’s funding request; if those bodies approve, a town vote is anticipated in late March and the district plans to apply to the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services for a Non‑Priority School Construction (HVAC) grant.
After discussing the impact on planned professional development and Recreation Department programming, the board agreed to convert the March 6 professional development day to a full student day to recover five weather‑related closures; Raynor said she will inform the Recreation Department about the change.
No formal contracting decisions or grant approvals were made at the meeting. The board will reconvene the Building Committee on March 2 and expect further updates if the town approves funding for the HVAC work.
