East Windsor board discusses handbook, outreach and community messaging ahead of budget presentations

At its meeting the East Windsor School District Board of Education discussed next steps for newly adopted board goals, drafting a Board of Education handbook and ramping up community outreach.

Board members reviewed a sample handbook (from another district) and agreed to coordinate content with legal/policy staff (Justin and Jessica) before publishing a district version on the website. The handbook's table of contents was discussed as a starting point and members asked staff to wait to finalize text until pending policy edits are complete.

Members also discussed increasing the board's public presence by staffing information tables at school events (theater productions, a glow dance, a tentative track rededication) and attending civic meetings (library, senior center, arts groups). The board suggested small, consistent talking points to help members present the district's progress, including recent achievement gains, the portrait of a graduate and career pathways, and requested staff (Justin and Daryl) draft those points.

The board discussed preparing members for possible testimony before the legislature and an offer was made to hold a working session to produce written testimony and to identify which topics would be most effective to present. Members volunteered to collect event dates and to identify community boards and meetings where a board presence would be helpful.

What's next: staff will circulate a calendar of community events and a draft set of talking points; members will indicate availability to staff for staffing tables and outreach opportunities. The board noted these outreach efforts are intended to provide accurate information about district progress and to build relationships ahead of larger communications about facilities or building projects.
