Calhoun County supervisors hear FY26/27 budget requests; Pomeroy to seek county road vacation

Calhoun County Board of Supervisors members received a series of FY26/27 budget requests and department updates at their Jan. 6 meeting, and the Pomeroy city clerk said the city will move forward with legal steps to vacate a county road.
Nick Buse, Calhoun/Sac County Engineer, briefed the board on department operations and later presented the engineer office's FY26/27 budget request accompanied by staff B.J. Musselman, maintenance superintendent, and Quinn Trice, engineering technician. The board discussed regional road and maintenance priorities but did not take formal action on the budget at the meeting.
Stephanie Henrich, executive director of Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA), gave program updates and requested funding for FY26/27. Bruce Musgrave, EMS director, presented updates and submitted budget requests for EMS operations and the county medical examiner. Theresa Hildreth, Calhoun County economic development director, outlined economic development priorities and her department's FY26/27 request. Dewey Snyder presented the Maintenance and Safety budgets, and Kristi Johnson, HR director, presented proposed employee handbook changes and said she would revise the draft and return with the updated handbook at a future meeting.
Representatives from Calhoun County libraries in Rockwell City, Somers, Farnhamville and Pomeroy presented an informational FY26/27 budget request after being inadvertently omitted from the agenda; no board action was requested or taken. Library representatives present included Denise Pohl (Rockwell City), Kim Kopecky (Somers), Rebecca Slawson (Farnhamville), and Yvette Crotty, Rodney Nelson and Carol Johnson (Pomeroy).
Pomeroy city clerk Sarah Juilfs raised a separate matter: a county road on the south side of Pomeroy that the city wants vacated. County engineer staff in attendance — Buse, Musselman and Trice — indicated they agreed with the proposed vacation. Juilfs said the city will work with its county attorney to draft the documents required to complete a formal vacation process; the board did not vote on the vacation at the meeting.
The board scheduled follow-up reviews as departments prepare formal budget requests. No dollar amounts were disclosed during the presentations; funding specifics and department requests were listed as FY26/27 budget submissions and will be considered in the county's formal budgeting process.
