Hackberry Elementary board hears audit update, records partial release of withheld funds

The Hackberry Elementary School District #3 Governing Board received an update Dec. 9 that some funds previously withheld by the Auditor General are being returned, and the board approved routine financial vouchers and payroll.
Board members were told the district has not yet received formal written notice of release from the Auditor General but that funds already are being disbursed: a $28,000 deposit has been received and an additional $42,000 is anticipated. The board discussed that these dollars were previously inaccessible because of unresolved audit findings.
Business Manager Sam Dell briefed the board on the FY26 budget and said the district submitted 14 items for auditor review; district auditors are scheduled to be on site Dec. 17–19 and a fuller report will be provided at the next meeting.
Administrator Christina Ramirez reported a correction to bus-mile reporting after notification from the Auditor General. "We found the miles were not recorded right. We had a lot more miles than what we had. We are able to get $30,000 opposed to last year $606," Ramirez said, indicating a substantial increase in eligibility for transportation funding compared with the prior year.
On the consent agenda, the board approved the Nov. 11, 2025 regular meeting minutes; accepted a list of donors and authorized thank-you letters; and approved accounts payable vouchers (2666–2669) and payroll vouchers (2612–2613). Those motions passed on recorded 5–0 votes: minutes approval (moved by Tammy Herrera, seconded by Valerie Grimes), donation thank-you letters (moved by Tammy Herrera, seconded by Charla Loomis), AP vouchers (moved by Charla Loomis, seconded by Tammy Herrera) and payroll vouchers (moved by Valerie Grimes, seconded by Pam Adams).
The board also discussed the Small School Fund allocation of $56,000 and is awaiting guidance from the County Superintendent about permissible uses of those funds.
The board will receive auditor findings after the auditors' visit in mid-December; no formal final determination was reported at the Dec. 9 meeting.
