The Arvon Township School District board voted Aug. 13 to participate in Kaleidoscope’s music and Tae Kwon Do (self‑defense) programs and set a $3,500 threshold for any expenditure that must come back to the board for approval.
Board Secretary L. Griffith opened the meeting and recorded roll call; motions to accept the meeting agenda and the July 9, 2024 minutes were moved and seconded by N. Wahmhoff and K. Hendrickson / K. Laramore and approved.
School staff member T. Hollon reported the district’s total liabilities and equity as $583,491.12. D. Sheldon told the board that auditors have what they need to complete the annual audit. The board also reviewed correspondence relating to a FOIA request and noted a possible phishing attempt that requires further research.
The board discussed a vacancy in the music teacher position following the departure of Mr. Fraser and considered contracting with Kaleidoscope to provide music classes and Tae Kwon Do self‑defense instruction. D. Sheldon will prepare an addendum to the Kaleidoscope service agreement; the board approved participation in the programs (motion passed, all in favor).
On outreach for a potential school millage, board member K. Laramore said she will update an informational postcard describing millage requirements and send it to Mary for approval. The minutes record that the board seeks to inform residents about millage details ahead of any formal action.
The board noted an increase in the district’s insurance premium from $12,242 in 2023 to $17,315 in 2024. A motion by L. Griffith, seconded by K. Laramore, was approved allowing T. Hollon to attend a “Pupil Accounting Training” webinar and an Excel spreadsheet webinar; the board approved REMC to provide annual computer backup services (annual fee not specified in the minutes).
The board also adopted a policy setting the spending threshold for items requiring board approval at $3,500. The meeting was set for Sept. 10, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.; K. Laramore moved to adjourn, K. Hendrickson seconded and the meeting ended at 6:42 p.m.
