Board discusses law‑enforcement coverage for events and upcoming zoning ordinance changes

Glen Arbor Township trustees discussed public‑safety coverage for upcoming 2025 events and reviewed planning commission activity at their March 18 meeting.
Clerk Pamela Laureto told the board the Leelanau County Road Commission will not issue event permits without proof of proper law‑enforcement coverage. She said the M‑22 Challenge has hired the Michigan State Police for coverage and two Race Day events will be covered by the National Park Service; the board agreed to explore hiring law‑enforcement coverage for the Fourth of July Parade.
Trustee Bob Hawley reported the Planning Commission held a public hearing on three proposed changes to the zoning ordinance and submitted those changes to the county for review. The commission has separated Accessory Buildings and Storage Containers from Accessory Dwelling in its review and will likely forward formal ordinance language to the Township Board next month.
Supervisor Tom Laureto told trustees he, Chief Ferguson and the Empire Township supervisor are beginning union negotiations with representatives of Glen Lake Firefighters Local 5086 for an agreement effective April 1, 2026. He also said he is pursuing missing revenue sharing from American Tower and plans to arrange corrected county signage and fire lane painting at the boat ramp and LeBear Resort.
No public comment was offered. The board adjourned at 7:59 p.m.
