Pawnee City discusses tree-inventory grant and interest in housing incentive program

Pawnee City — Members of the city’s Tree Board and Pawnee City BOLD updated the City Council on efforts to pursue a Nebraska Arboretum Grant and on local interest in the city’s housing-incentive announcement.
Aaron Sawyer and Tree Board members explained that the grant requires an arborist and a tree inventory. The board discussed using JEO for an aerial tree inventory to reduce on-foot survey time, and they raised concerns about where new trees could be planted (not in the public right-of-way), soil conditions at the ball field and who would maintain new plantings. "It will be a big hurdle to complete the tree inventory and ... who will take care of the newly planted trees?" Foreman Spencer Cumley said, describing watering and equipment limitations.
Separately, Sawyer said the office had received roughly 50 applications from people interested in the $50,000 incentive package for new homes; he said SENDD will determine which applicants meet the program eligibility. He added that construction on the initial houses is paused until at least one house is sold, and that Pawnee City BOLD would be responsible for managing units and upkeep obligations under the program.
Council and board members agreed to continue discussions; Tree Board volunteers plan further meetings with Sawyer and to contact JEO about arborist support and aerial inventory options.
