Godwin Heights data show steep early-grade MAP decline; district plans targeted 2nd‑grade reading supports

Godwin Heights Public Schools officials presented a West Godwin Data Report on Oct. 27, 2025, showing a marked drop in early-grade MAP assessments. Superintendent Conklin and Assistant Superintendent Krynicki said cohorts that entered in 2022 showed roughly a 30% decline in kindergarten reading and math scores, with the largest performance drop occurring between first and second grades.

District leaders emphasized that while students showed growth on some measures, that growth did not result in sustained grade-level proficiency. "We are seeing growth but not retention in grade-level proficiency," the presentation summary stated. The report called for data-driven monitoring, stronger classroom coaching, and consistent fidelity to instructional models in ELA and math.

As a near-term target, presenters said the district intends to improve 2nd‑grade reading proficiency by increasing dedicated instructional time for foundational literacy and reducing class size where possible. School administrators also discussed supports for English learners, summer learning loss mitigation and the effect of student transiency on cohort tracking.

Board member Erskine commended administrators "for prioritizing data, maintaining standards and applying measurable approaches to improvement." Officials did not provide an exact dollar amount tied to interventions or a firm timeline for results; they said implementation details and comparative metrics to similar districts are to be developed as part of the district's 90‑day evaluation work.

The board did not take formal action on the report at the meeting; administrators will return with more detailed implementation metrics and any related budget implications.
