Chelmsford committee approves $3,500 for Wotton Street community garden water system

The Town of Chelmsford Community Preservation Committee approved a $3,500 appropriation on Jan. 21, 2026 to fund equipment for a new water system at the Wotton Street Community Garden.
Stephen Mayotte of the Community Garden Advisory Committee presented the request, describing prior similar work at Sunny Meadow Farm that the committee had funded at $4,500 (the earlier project came in under budget). Mayotte said the current site already has electricity and a shed that will be reset on its block foundation; the proposed work will add a new well of about 20 feet depth, a pump, tank and control equipment so both wells can be used in the system. He also noted that two 400-gallon gravity tanks were removed from a prior system and are being stored at Warren-Pohl Reservation, and that signage noting the water is not safe for drinking had been posted at the other site.
Karl Bischoff moved to approve $3,500 from the Open Space Capital Improvement Account for tank, controls and related equipment; Dr. Deirdre Connolly seconded. The roll-call vote was 6-0 in favor.
The minutes do not specify installation timing or vendor; follow-up will be handled by the Community Development Office and the Community Garden Advisory Committee.
