Frontier Farm-to-School team pitches pollinator garden and school visits to Whately committee

Representatives from Frontier Regional School Union #38 presented an expanding Farm-to-School program to the Whately Agricultural Committee on Oct. 14, outlining plans for a grant-funded pollinator garden at Whately Elementary School and monthly school visits to local farms.

Theresa Carter and Megan described work that began with prototypes in Sunderland and Conway and is now being extended to four elementary schools plus Frontier Regional middle and high schools. The presenters said the program introduces produce to students during regular visits and includes curriculum and garden installations supported by a grant for pollinator plantings.

A community survey developed by the presenters indicated strong interest in a school 'garden special'—an in-school class similar to gym or music—and ranked farm field trips as the second most popular option. Local farmers have expressed willingness to host visits, the presenters said.

Julie Waggoner, representing the Select Board, provided updates on the town’s Giving Garden and noted the program’s volunteer base. Doug Coldwell said the Farm-to-School initiative aligns with the AG Committee’s mission but cautioned that any funding requests must respect the town’s budget schedule: budget requests are due by mid-December.

The committee did not vote on funding at the meeting; members discussed partnerships with schools, farms and the senior center and the potential for the committee to provide a representative to the Giving Garden committee.
