Reed City Council clears Oktobeer permit, car show and sesquicentennial budget; raises election worker pay

At its Aug. 12 meeting the Reed City Council approved the Reed City Brewing Oktobeer permit for Sept. 21, the GACC Car Show for Aug. 17, a $51,000 sesquicentennial celebration fund and Resolution 2024‑08 raising election worker pay to $15/hour and chairs to $16/hour; the council tabled a Halloween Spooktacular pending logistics review.
The Reed City Council on Aug. 12 approved several event permits, routine contracts and budget actions and adopted a resolution increasing election worker pay.
Event permits approved included Reed City Brewing’s Oktobeer on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, as presented by Deanna Murphy, and the GACC Car Show scheduled for Aug. 17, 2024 (7 a.m.–3 p.m.). The council tabled a proposal from the Reed City Chamber of Commerce for a Halloween Spooktacular on Oct. 26, 2024 and asked Chamber representative Alanna McBee to meet with the city manager and police chief to resolve logistics before returning to council.
Council approved a $51,000 budget and created Fund #496 to finance the city’s 150th (sesquicentennial) celebration in summer 2025 (Resolution 2024‑15), and authorized an advance of up to $51,000 from the General Fund to Fund #496 to be repaid by Dec. 31, 2025 (Resolution 2024‑16). Council also accepted sealed‑bid procedures to dispose of the WWTP’s 2001 John Deere tractor with a minimum bid of $3,000.
On personnel pay, council adopted Resolution 2024‑08 to raise election worker hourly pay to $15 and election chair pay to $16, effective July 1, 2024. The meeting record also includes an updated wage and step schedule for multiple positions (City Clerk, Treasurer/Finance Director, DPW superintendent, police chief and WWTP superintendent) as part of the resolved pay table.
Other routine approvals included MI Deal salt purchasing contract for $13,062, a BS&A software subscription at $12,950 annually (and up to $40,015 for professional services), and approval of MML liability and property insurance quoted at $80,623. The consent agenda was approved as presented.
Public comment included a report from Donna Wheeler that Art in the Park drew up to 72 visitors, and thanks to volunteers and park hosts who refurbished picnic tables at Rambadt Park. The meeting adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
