Hoosac Valley committee OKs FY26 calendar, school choice openings and launches regional agreement amendments

The Hoosac Valley Regional School Committee unanimously approved several administrative items on March 24, including the FY26 calendar, recommended school choice slot openings, and a vote to begin the regional agreement amendment process.
On a motion by John Duval, seconded by Andy Przystanski, the committee approved the FY26 calendar that proposes two in-service days for staff on Aug. 27–28 and a first day for students of Sept. 2, 2025. The administration noted ACTA approval is still required for a start-before-Labor-Day model; if ACTA objects, the committee will revisit the calendar.
The committee also approved recommended school choice openings after Superintendent Aaron Dean reviewed projected class sizes: kindergarten and grade 1 (five slots each), grade 2 (two), grades 3–4 (no openings), grade 5 (six), grade 6 (no openings), grade 7 (eight), grade 8 (five), grades 9–11 (ten slots each) and grade 12 (five slots). Erin Milne moved the motion; John Duval seconded and the vote was unanimous.
On regional governance, the committee discussed proposed amendments to the Hoosac Valley Regional School District Agreement to soften assessment shifts by using a five-year average for assessments and to review representation methods (town-specific seats vs. district-wide elections). The committee voted unanimously to authorize legal counsel to draft the amendment language for future consideration by the committee and town meetings.
Outcome: The calendar and school-choice openings are approved administratively and staff will pursue ACTA review if needed; the regional agreement amendment process moves to legal drafting and future town votes.
