Peru Police Chief Bruce Cullett to serve as Hinsdale acting chief; Select Board approves agreement

The Hinsdale Select Board voted Jan. 28 to approve an intermunicipal agreement that will allow Peru Police Chief Bruce Cullett to serve both Peru and Hinsdale while Hinsdale’s chief is on leave. The board signed the agreement and planned to appoint Cullett as Acting Police Chief at its Feb. 11 meeting; Cullett will take the signed document to Peru’s Select Board on Feb. 2 for final signatures.
Town Administrator Bob Graves told the board that KP Law reviewed and cleared the agreement and thanked Chief Cullett for his assistance in managing police coverage during the leave. “I want to thank Chief Cullett for his leadership and assistance in making this happen,” Graves said.
On a separate motion, the board declared Cruiser 652 surplus and approved selling the vehicle after removing usable police gear and department lettering. The motions to accept the intermunicipal agreement and to declare the cruiser surplus were each moved, seconded and approved by the Select Board.
Chief Cullett also updated the board on staffing and administrative needs in the department. He said the State Police and neighboring departments in Dalton and Peru continue to assist Hinsdale, and that part-time Officer Keith Avalle intends to return when his physician clears him for duty. Cullett said he is working with Sergeant Tarjick to reduce a backlog in license-to-carry (LTC) applications and has arranged for Hinsdale to use Peru’s fingerprint scanner to minimize state rejections of hand-printed submissions.
The board’s actions mean Hinsdale will formalize shared coverage for the near term and proceed with the surplus sale as part of routine fleet management. The board plans the formal appointment of Cullett as Acting Police Chief at the Feb. 11 Select Board meeting.
