Resident urges safety steps after pedestrian death; council hears local law-enforcement updates

A visitor who identified himself as Rich Martin used the Village of Luther’s public-comment period at the Feb. 11 special meeting to press for safety measures after a recent pedestrian death.
Martin told the council the village should consider purchasing cement roadblocks for events to reduce the risk to pedestrians and attendees. He also reported that officers Nixon and Huley plan to retire and said Chris Swanson will collaborate with a county task force to aid countywide anti–sex‑trafficking efforts. Martin said several criminal cases have been resubmitted to the new prosecutor, including the Luther Bank robbery.
Martin also updated the council on community events, saying the 'Tickets for Turkeys' fundraiser went well and that the annual toy giveaway served more than 100 children.
The council did not take formal action on Martin’s roadblock recommendation during the meeting; no funding or procurement motion was recorded. Separately, the council addressed operational items later in the meeting, including approval of financial reports and a street closure for a community event that will involve placement of tables and fire pits.
Melanie Davis, speaking later in public comment, asked the council to allow the Luther Days Association to apply for a Lake County Community Foundation grant to fund lighting at the rodeo; the council approved that request.
