Village of Luther approves Main Street closure for event, clears bills and allows grant application

The Village of Luther council voted Feb. 11 to close Main Street for a community event and handled routine financial and administrative business.
At the special meeting at Village Hall, President Andy Treiber read the agenda and the board approved it after removing a salary-resolution item. The council approved regular minutes from Jan. 14 and special meeting minutes from Jan. 22. The board accepted the January 2025 financial report, which showed a General Fund balance of $154,633.40 and a CD balance of $262,785.21. The council also approved payment of presented bills, including invoices from Consumers Energy, Republic Services and Municipal Underwriters; a roll-call vote recorded seven yes votes and the motion carried.
The council approved a motion from Michelle Goodman to close Main Street for an event with placement of three tables, two trash cans and fire pits; the board discussed and agreed on a closure window from about 7 a.m. to midnight. Brittany Calrson made the motion to close the street, which James Bacon seconded; the motion carried.
During new-business discussion, Clerk Carrie Fansler reviewed options for cyber insurance coverage. After board discussion members declined to add cyber coverage.
On a related community item, Melanie Davis sought permission for the Luther Days Association (LDA) to apply to the Lake County Community Foundation for funding to add lighting at the rodeo site. Tiffany Clark moved to allow the LDA to apply; Bacon seconded and the motion passed.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 7:56 p.m. The council did not take any action on the removed salary-resolution item.
