The Reed City Council on July 8 approved administrative items and heard several community updates, including progress on the Bike Park, sesquicentennial planning and depot rental for the farmers market.
Council approved leasing the Porteous Depot to the farmers market for $50 per week on Wednesday nights for four hours. The Sesquicentennial Committee received council authority to send engagement letters and apply for non-matching grants in coordination with the city manager.
Bike Park volunteers Jon Zelinski and John Colley told the council the park is in Phase 2 of improvements and is drawing riders from across the region, citing visitors from Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Ludington, Fremont, Big Rapids and Cadillac. They thanked DPW for moving a shed and asked for continued support. Charles Lupo announced a sesquicentennial meeting at the Heritage Museum and the council thanked volunteers working on the celebration.
Fire Chief Jeffrey Stein reported that two Reed City firefighters, Abby and Mark Walkins, performed CPR for a person at Hamlin Lake while on vacation and were credited with saving a life, a point Chief Stein said he relayed after receiving a commendation call from another community.
What happens next: the farmers market will proceed with weekly depot rental; the Sesquicentennial Committee and Bike Park volunteers will continue their planning and volunteer recruitment; DPW will provide project support as needed.
