The Escambia County Board of Education on March 3 approved a slate of consent items including multiple textbook adoptions, vendor contracts for facilities and services, and three student expulsions, while tabling consideration of the proposed 2025-26 code of conduct for 30 days.
The board moved, seconded and approved routine purchases and adoptions the board packet listed for the coming school year, including K'12 science and CTE textbook adoptions and several grade-level science textbook purchases. The board also approved a purchase listed in the agenda for an "extended career exploration pack" from Reality Works Incorporated; the agenda listed the amount as $13,918.57. Several voice votes throughout the consent agenda were recorded as "All in favor" with no roll-call tallies provided.
In facilities and services business, the board approved a contract with Kramer Doer Services Inc. for demolition and debris removal of visitor-side bleachers at Fington High School (amount listed in the packet) and a contract with Sun Flooring for vinyl flooring installations at multiple school locations. The board approved an education-services contract for ACT/ACP coaching for a high school program; a board member abstained from that vote and the clerk recorded an abstention as noted during the meeting.
The board also renewed appointments for board attorneys Brooks Garrett and Kirk Garrett for calendar-year 2025 (including a $1,000 retainer) and approved an additional legal-services retainer for Hill Carter, Franco, Cole & Black, P.C., as listed on the agenda.
On personnel actions, the board accepted the superintendent's recommendation to non-renew the principal contract of Toya McMillan effective June 30, 2025. The board also approved payment of bills and payroll and accepted the superintendent's personnel recommendations as presented.
Under student-discipline business, the board approved three expulsions: an Escambia County middle school student, a W.S. Neil Middle School student, and a W.S. Neil High School student. For each case the superintendent stated that the student would be allowed to receive educational services through the Escambia County virtual school.
The board tabled action on the proposed 2025-26 code of conduct for 30 days to allow additional review and discussion.
The meeting concluded with approvals completed by voice vote and no recorded roll-call tallies provided in the public transcript. The board adjourned at the end of the session. The district will carry forward the tabled code-of-conduct item for a future work session and full board action.
