Council holds first reading of ordinance to expand downtown alcohol sales in B2 zone

As presented to the council, the rule would continue to prohibit alcohol sales within 100 feet of a church, school or child-care facility except where explicit exceptions apply.
Council members said downtown business owners had requested the change to allow restaurants in parts of the central business district to sell alcohol; speakers emphasized the amendment is a first reading and will return for a subsequent vote after required review and publication. The mayor encouraged council members to consult the fire department and other stakeholders before the next reading. No roll-call vote was recorded for final adoption on April 27.
