Community in Schools and campus safety updates: FAFSA night, college visits, boots donation and home-visit safety work

At the Dec. 10 meeting Amy Derrer of Community in Schools of NWMI reported a slate of student-support activities and recent partnerships.
Derrer said Family FAFSA Night is scheduled for Dec. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. High-school students will visit Ferris State University on Jan. 14; visits to Kirtland Community College and Gaylord M-TEC/Grayling are scheduled for Jan. 16. The middle school held a Passport Party on Dec. 3 and four Student Wellness team members met Representative Roth during a Nov. 26 legislative visit. The elementary school received 25 pairs of boots through Boots for Kids; each pair included two pairs of socks and a hat. CIS assisted with Breakfast with Santa and also purchased hats, gloves, mittens and new books to distribute to attending children.
Chief Seeley provided a safety update, saying she has been doing home visits, working with students on safety plans and supporting school events such as a 'Girl Power' lunch with fourth-grade girls.
Administrators acknowledged these partnerships and said the events have strong participation; Bernadette Pletcher reported kindergarten through second-grade holiday concerts and 95% parent-teacher conference attendance, and the elementary student count was listed as 353.
Board members did not receive public comments on action items at this meeting.
