Mancelona board approves hires, banking changes and hears administrators report smooth start to school year

The Mancelona Public Schools Board of Education on Sept. 10 approved its consent agenda, accepted several staff hires and resignations, approved changes to district bank account signatories and heard administrators describe a smooth start to the school year.
Board President Burt Thompson called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. and the board approved the agenda on a motion by Kim Musselman, seconded by Bisson. The board then approved the consent agenda on a Ross/Bisson motion, unanimously 5-0. The consent agenda included the Aug. 13, 2024 minutes and accounts payable disbursements from the General Fund ($21,068.10 on Aug. 13; $806.34 on Aug. 26; $126,776.41 on Aug. 27), the Bond Fund ($9,908.00 on Aug. 13; $40.00 on Aug. 27) and the Sinking Fund ($65.87 on Aug. 13; $8,719.00 on Aug. 27). The board approved hiring recommendations for Jeff Krino (assistant football coach), Myssy Miller-Hamlin (high school French), Kendyll Schaeffer (middle/high school art) and Joshua Thelander (middle school math). The board also accepted resignations, including from Johanna Derrer from a GSRP teaching position and Loretta Stotler as a bus driver.
Bernadette Pletcher, speaking for district administration, said the year had a "great, smooth start," noting that Strong Beginnings and GSRP classes will begin next week and staff conducted home visits. Pletcher said the district received a Number Corner grant for K–5 and that Melanie Griffore, the district math coach, will lead math-literacy efforts. "The parking lots have been marked and it works fantastic for parent pickup and drop off," Pletcher said.
Middle-school updates came from Jake Murray, who said enrollment increased and that NWEA benchmarking testing was underway to guide intervention placements. High-school updates came from Trent Naumcheff, who said about 100 students are participating in sports and band, described building improvements and restorative re-entry work, and said current seniors' SAT results were near the state average; he added that students now have access to their scores after a question from Jenny Lee.
Amy Burk of Communities In Schools of NWMI said her staff participated in Meet the Teacher and restorative-practices training, and announced a Spooktacular Costume Fun Run on Oct. 5 at 10:00 a.m. and a College Fair at the high school on Oct. 10; President Thompson asked whether trade schools would attend and Burk confirmed they would.
On an administrative action, the board voted to remove Jeff DiRosa and Dale Ackler from all 4Front banking and credit-card accounts and to add Superintendent Tina Frollo as a signatory; the motion (Ross/Derrer) passed 5-0. The board also appointed Gerald Clark as board treasurer and added him to all banking accounts on a Ross/Derrer motion; that vote was unanimous as well.
Superintendent Tina Frollo told the board the district had productive professional development with Bill Boyle focused on building relationships, clear communication and accountability; Boyle is scheduled to return in November and March. President Thompson asked that next month's board meeting be held in the high school lecture room. On a Derrer/Musselman motion the board adjourned at 4:57 p.m.
The board did not receive public comments during the meeting.
