Superintendent reports retention bonus, facilities and cybersecurity steps for Mancelona schools

Superintendent Mrs. Frollo briefed the Mancelona Board of Education on operations, staffing and facilities projects at the Dec. 10 meeting.
Frollo said the district had its first two snow days of the school year and thanked bus driver Brian Skop and neighboring superintendents for coordination on route safety. She told the board it had approved $1,500 retention bonuses for returning staff and noted the last day before winter break is Friday, Dec. 20 with school resuming Jan. 6.
Frollo reported a grant was secured to replace drinking fountains and that the Hawk Lake timber cut — begun before Thanksgiving — is projected to yield more than $15,000. The district also received donations from Rick and Kathy Munger to purchase Christmas presents for families in need.
On staffing, Frollo confirmed Lori Harvey submitted her resignation as Early Childhood Director; the district has tentatively offered the position to a candidate pending background checks and paperwork.
Technology and security items were highlighted: fiber was installed at the elementary to improve connectivity, the district has begun KnowBe4 cybersecurity training for staff (started Dec. 3), Doug Olson will conduct a cybersecurity audit, and Tony Tipton proposed deploying multi-factor authentication. The district has received a quote from Verkada for a camera upgrade and will receive a competing quote for an Axis camera system.
Facilities updates included review of drawings by Ed McCarty for summer work, ongoing efforts to balance heat in the 5/6 wing, completion of baseball dugouts and groundwork, and roofing/facia repairs scheduled with contractor Versatile.
Frollo thanked custodial and maintenance staff for extra effort during winter weather and noted Chartwells helped provide meals for school events.
