Aliceville accepts highest bids for surplus vehicles, sets one-week pickup deadline

The Aliceville City Council on Feb. 24 accepted the highest eligible bids for a range of impounded and surplus vehicles after council clerks read sealed bids aloud.
Clerks recorded many offers from local bidders; examples named during the meeting include Ronnie Williams, Jesse Jackson, JJ Merchant, Maurice Jones, Derek Wright, Michael Jordan and Monica Williams. Bids varied considerably by vehicle and condition, with many clustered in the $300–$450 range and a small number of higher offers (for example, Maurice Jones's $2,500 bid on a 2012 Mazda was noted during tallying).
Council adopted a motion to accept the highest bid on eligible vehicles and to give successful bidders one week to pick up their vehicles; items that did not meet the city's towing/cost threshold would be refused and placed into a future rebid or auction. At one point in discussion staff noted a $700 minimum in order to cover total costs, and council indicated bids below the towing/threshold would be refused.
The motion to accept the highest eligible bids was moved by Maurice Jones and seconded by Woods; the motion carried by voice vote. Council directed staff to prepare a rebid process and to publish future auctions in the local newspaper and at city hall for transparency.
