Geneva City administrators report strong start to school year; budget hearings set for September

The superintendent and school administrators told the board the new school year opened smoothly: kindergarten orientation and open house attendance were strong (estimated at 90–95% turnout), teachers completed initial onboarding and professional development, and beginning-of-year assessments (STAR and i-Ready) have started.
Career-technical programs have resumed activity with a career coach supporting classroom engagement, and administrators reported students are adapting to phone and focus policies. Administrators also provided facilities updates: the lunchroom/300-building passed final inspection on Aug. 2 with a small punch list remaining, campus camera upgrades were underway, and site cleanup tasks — including removal of a large dirt pile and addressing a drainage speed bump by the football field — were completed.
The board scheduled budget hearings: a regular meeting on Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. and a follow-up budget presentation/approval session on Sept. 11 at 7:15 a.m.; a quorum will be required for any formal budget approval. The finance office told members it will provide final budget numbers at the next meeting.
The board also announced meetings will be videoed and posted to the district website (gck12.com) to increase public access; logistics and turnaround time for posting were discussed and staff said they are working through the process.
