Mancelona board approves consent agenda, insurance arrangements and superintendent coaching contract

At its Nov. 12 meeting the Mancelona Public Schools board unanimously approved the consent agenda including multiple hires and resignations and monthly disbursements; it also approved joining WMHIP, accepted updated MESSA prescription options for most employee groups, and contracted for superintendent coaching with ISD reimbursement.
The Mancelona Public Schools Board of Education on Nov. 12 unanimously approved its consent agenda, accepted new insurance arrangements and authorized a superintendent coaching contract.
The board, chaired by President Burt Thompson, approved the meeting agenda at 4:30 p.m. and then passed the consent agenda (Musselman/MacQuarrie) on a 6-0 vote. The consent package included approval of the Oct. 8 regular meeting minutes and a set of accounts-payable disbursements across funds: General Fund checks dated 10/08/2024 ($92,000.18), 10/09/2024 ($2,349.00), 10/15/2024 ($175.00), 10/22/2024 ($96,566.88) and 11/04/2024 ($135,731.35); Sinking Fund on 10/22/2024 ($2,040.50); and Bond Fund checks on 10/08/2024 ($592,223.45), 10/22/2024 ($10,408.00) and 11/04/2024 ($814,735.53). The consent motion also carried personnel items: the board accepted recommendations to hire Allison Fales as JV volleyball coach, Carey Squires as high school bowling coach, Jon Spoor as a bus driver and Belinda DeClark as an elementary assistant; it accepted resignations from Sam Day (full-time bus driver) and Jeff Baumann (middle/elementary special education teacher).
On insurance and benefits, the board voted to approve participation in the WMHIP insurance pool and to name a trustee and alternate (Ross/Bisson, 6-0). Superintendent Tina Frollo told the board that "The Pool is an insurance consortium that is able to provide significant cost savings for school employees through reduced insurance rates," and that each participating group has representation on the Pool.
The board also approved updated insurance offerings from MESSA. Frollo said MESSA "counter-offered with prescriptions options," and the board approved staying with MESSA for all employee groups except the Administrative group, which selected a different option (Musselman/Bisson, 6-0).
Finally, the board approved a Goal Setting, Evaluation and Superintendent Coaching agreement (Ross/MacQuarrie, 6-0). Burt Thompson said former contractor Mike Washburn has retired and will be replaced by John Scholten of the MI Leadership Institute; the intermediate school district (ISD) will reimburse the district $1,000 per year toward the contract.
The meeting closed with a brief discussion of items for future consideration, including holding a goal-setting session at the December meeting and encouraging new board members to complete MASB Board Membership 101; the board adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
