Canaan commission begins preliminary inventory of street trees, assigns roads for monitoring

The Town of Canaan Inland Wetlands/Conservation Commission on April 20 agreed to begin a preliminary inventory of street trees across town to document potentially hazardous trees and harmful vine growth.
The action is part of the commission’s effort to assist the Highway Department in developing a street-tree monitoring and maintenance plan aimed at demonstrating due diligence in identifying trees that may present liability risks. Members discussed carrying forward work from a prior meeting that Bruce BenneV attended and agreed to continue documenting trees and vines that could be detrimental.
Commission members divided the town into monitoring assignments: Brant Burz will inspect Steep Road and Wangum Lake Road; Susan Kelsey will cover Amy Road; Chairman Mark Burdick will examine Beebe Hill (south of Route 7) and 6-Rod Road; and Marlene Van Gulick will check Page Road. The inventory will note both trees presenting possible liability and the presence of detrimental vines.
Commissioners said the inventory is preliminary and intended to inform a management plan the commission will develop with highway staff; no formal policy or ordinance was adopted at the meeting. The commission plans to continue the inventory and report progress at a future meeting.
