Falmouth to roll out automated trash carts this spring; new fire chief starts

Falmouth’s town manager announced the long‑planned automated trash cart program will begin distribution to curbside customers in mid‑May, with the initial phase expected to be completed by Memorial Day.
Town Manager Mike Renshaw said each curbside household will receive a 65‑gallon wheeled cart as the default; 35‑gallon carts are available by request and 95‑gallon carts will be available beginning Aug. 3 for large households or those with special needs. During a summer transition period residents with excess volume may place one additional compliant cart at the curb; after Labor Day 2026 drivers will collect only the official cart and bags placed outside carts will no longer be picked up.
Renshaw credited the town’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee and Solid Waste Coordinator Mary Ryther for developing the program and said NSET Disposal will administer requests. He said a RAVE alert and a QR code on the town home page will help residents self‑select cart sizes.
In the same report, Renshaw announced that Jeff Lewis had started as the town’s new fire‑rescue chief and that Finance Director Laura Citroen will retire at the end of May. He said the finance director search produced 20 applications and first‑round interviews will be scheduled soon.
The select board did not take formal action on the trash program at the meeting; Renshaw directed residents with questions to the recycling and solid‑waste coordinator and to the town website for additional project details.
