Public raises governance concerns and questions board pay at Geneva City school board meeting

Williams alleged instances in which a board member pressured the superintendent to impose specific punishments on students and later indicated they would use their voting power to influence board outcomes. “Authority belongs to the board acting collectively, not as individual members,” Williams said, adding that board members must “refer complaints and inquiries to the proper school authorities and abstain from individual council action.”
Williams also criticized board compensation as out of step with classroom needs, saying the board had “made it a decision to pay themselves approximately $21,000 each year” and urging the board to revisit the policy and consider redirecting funds to instructional priorities.
Amy Conner, a delegate added to the agenda, spoke during public comment about a recent girls’ basketball game in which students stood and cheered as their team reached the Elite Eight. Conner said a board member’s direction led to security intervention and that students were reprimanded despite not violating posted rules. “So, I ask the board tonight to please let these kids know, commend them for what they done,” Conner said, arguing that supporting student athletes should be a board priority.
The board did not take formal action in response to the comments during the meeting. Chair remarks later reiterated that individual board members who act outside public session are not representing the authority of the full board.
What’s next: The board moved on to its agenda items and later entered executive session; public commenters requested enforcement of policy and attention to student support but no formal policy changes were proposed or adopted in the meeting.
