Mancelona administrators report improved NWEA math results and expanded student supports

District administrators gave the board an update on academics and extracurricular programs during the Feb. 11 meeting.
Trent Naumcheff said the first semester ended with 87% of students passing their classes and highlighted extracurricular achievements, including five wrestlers advancing to regionals: Theodore Parzych, Gavin Woodcox, Jaden Grutsch, Collyn Toth and Aaron McQueen.
Jake Murray reported that the middle and high school bands performed Feb. 10 and that ELA and Math data review shows "remarkable growth" across the building. Murray said Math NWEA results for 5th grade show 49% of students are above the national average and that the percentage below the national average declined from 57% to 38%; Mr. Elder attributed the improvement to increased interventions.
Amy Burk of Communities In Schools of Northwest Michigan told the board FAFSA assistance continues at the high school and staff organized college visits to Ferris State and Kirtland Community College; a grief group through Michael's Place began with three students. Bernadette Pletcher reported elementary enrollment is over 300 and previewed a Robotics Program presentation planned for the end of the month. Murray also noted a middle-school Penny War fundraiser had raised $240 in two days.
Administrators framed these items as part of a combination of academic interventions, extracurricular engagement and partnership services aimed at improving outcomes and supporting students' social and postsecondary readiness.
