Legislative Coordinating Council approves interim meeting days and narrows energy committee focus to emerging nuclear technologies

The Legislative Coordinating Council voted to approve recommended interim committee meeting days and placed a one-day scope limit on the special committee on energy, utilities and telecommunications to examine "emerging nuclear technologies." Majority Leader Blazy moved the measure and the Senate President seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.

The motion, offered by Majority Leader Blazy, also directed that the speaker and the president appoint the chair and vice chair of each committee. Blazy said the limit was intended to narrow an otherwise expansive request and reduce costs for staff and members.

Shirley Marorrow had earlier clarified which special-committee letters were new to the packet and which were included in the prior month's materials; she also explained a contested counting of additional days for the special education funding task force, noting the packet showed additional days beyond those already used.

Minority Leader Sykes and other members pressed for targeted use of oversight days and for clearer agendas on committees such as government oversight and rental housing. Several lawmakers noted some topics have had repeated hearings in recent years and the council trimmed requests to manage expense and member time.

The council approved Blazy's motion without a roll-call tally recorded in the transcript. The approved motion was recorded for follow-up and scheduling at future LCC meetings.
