The Walworth County Children with Disabilities Education Board approved several school items during its June 17 meeting, including the annual academic standards for the 2026–27 school year, immediate adoption of policy 5136 (personal communication devices) to meet a statutory submission requirement, and an amendment reducing the school nurse contract from 200 to 190 days to align with a shortened summer-school schedule.
On academic standards, staff said Lakeland School follows the Wisconsin alternative achievement standards (essential elements) for students with significant disabilities and uses national standards for PE, art and music; the board approved the standards by voice vote.
During discussion, a board member raised parental concerns regarding CASEL materials used elsewhere and asked staff to "keep an eye on that"; staff replied that Lakeland’s social-emotional learning curriculum is aligned to Wisconsin competencies and is often adapted or developed in-house to fit students’ IEP needs.
Policy 5136 on personal communication devices was brought forward for immediate action because of a statutory obligation to submit certain language before July 1; staff noted that disability-related exceptions and IEP provisions would govern device access for students who need them for educational progress. The board approved the policy.
The proposed ordinance to reduce the nurse contract from 200 to 190 days was presented as aligning nurses with teaching schedules given the shorter summer school; staff noted that if additional nursing coverage is needed, nurses could be scheduled and compensated per the pay scale. The board approved the ordinance change.
The board also accepted resignation notices from two staff members; packet materials will include resignation notifications going forward, staff said.
