Walworth County plans autonomous vehicle demonstration this summer with USDOT participation expected

Walworth County staff told the Transportation Committee on June 1 they are scheduling a rural autonomous vehicle (RAV) demonstration for mid-August to early September and coordinating with university partners and USDOT.
Jean (program manager) and Mark (county transit staff) said they identified a common shared-ride route that fits project requirements for distance, speed limits and mixed city-county roadways, and will complete route inspection and manned test rides before the public demonstration. Jean said the UW research team is completing technical development and will coordinate availability with USDOT; staff asked for local dignitaries to attend the demonstration.
Mark clarified regulatory limits: though the demonstration expects the vehicle to drive without hands on the wheel, Wisconsin law requires a person to be present behind the wheel during the test. He added that the program is largely a university-led demonstration that will include other local partners.
Why it matters: a successful demonstration could raise the county's profile in shared rural mobility and attract federal attention; it does not, however, change current driver staffing or legal requirements for public service without further approvals.
What happens next: staff will continue coordination with UW and USDOT and report updates to the full County Board and the Transportation Committee.
