Cromwell Library seeks town support for bell restoration, outlines spring and summer programs

Library Director Kara Canney told the Cromwell Library Commission on March 9 that the estimated cost to restore the library bell is "just shy of $21,000," and she is requesting that the town pay half the restoration cost.
Canney also reviewed several upcoming programs and operational matters. Staff have begun planning the Summer Reading program despite recent winter weather. The library will again participate in the statewide Passport to Libraries program, which encourages patrons to visit participating libraries to collect passport stamps and enter a raffle.
Canney reported facility needs in the Belden Room: the room’s sound-system amplifier has reached its expected life and requires replacement. She said staff are awaiting delivery of seeds for the library’s seed library, and that policies the commission approved to reflect statutory changes will be forwarded to the Town Council for approval.
On community services, Canney said Public Health Nurse Maura Esposito approached the library to host monthly hours; beginning in April the nurse will be at the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.
Canney described several sustainability-focused events slated for spring: a Trees for Children program (registration by March 15 for free trees), a Plant Swap scheduled for May 21 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m., and a Clothing Swap on Saturday, May 16, with drop-off dates set for May 14 and 15.
No formal vote on the bell restoration request was taken at the March 9 meeting; Canney said she is requesting town support and will pursue the next steps with municipal officials.
