Whittier Tech celebrates 31 SkillsUSA medalists; committee approves Portsmouth and Atlanta trips

At the Whittier Regional Vocational Technical School Committee meeting on May 20, staff and students presented the school's SkillsUSA results and several student-led projects, and the committee approved out-of-state trips tied to those activities.
Jane Moskovich, the health assisting instructor and SkillsUSA lead advisor, said Whittier Tech produced 31 medalists at the state competition (three bronze, 23 silver and five gold). She introduced student winners across multiple shops and described team and individual accomplishments, including a health-services team that will compete at the national contest.
Students described their projects on the dais. One student said the chapter's community-service diaper drive, run with partner St. Vincent de Paul, collected "about 1,352 diapers and 80 packages of wipes" that were donated to a diaper bank. Moskovich and other staff praised the students'rigor and chaperone support; Lisa DeMaio of St. James Parish commended students for both competition work and hands-on service at the diaper bank.
The committee also approved two out-of-state field trips connected to student learning: a May 19 visit to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and travel to Atlanta, Ga., for national SkillsUSA competition (five students and four staff). Committee members confirmed proper paperwork and budget lines; both field-trip motions passed by roll-call votes.
Chair Fitzgerald and others congratulated the medalists and noted staff retirements and special advisors' long service to SkillsUSA. The committee encouraged prompt submission of permission slips and required paperwork for the field trips.
