Whittier Tech keeps school choice closed for 2026-27 amid long in-district waitlist

The Whittier Tech School Committee on May 20 voted to keep its school-choice enrollment closed for the 2026-27 school year, citing a lengthy waitlist of in-district applicants. The committee's decision allows students who are already enrolled and later move out of the district to remain and finish their career and technical education program.
Superintendent Lynch explained the district prioritizes in-district students and that the program will continue to permit "students who move out of the district after they've already been accepted" to finish their programs. "We're just voting to not allow school choice this year because we have such a waitlist," she said. Committee members noted the district sometimes received significant per-student choice funding in prior years but that current capacity constraints and enrollment demand make accepting new choice students impractical.
Members clarified the meaning of "in-district": students from one of the district's 11 member communities. The motion to deny new choice applications while permitting existing out-of-district students to complete their programs passed by roll-call vote.
