Marblehead Board of Health expands membership and elects Helaine R. Hazlett chair

The Marblehead Board of Health voted July 9 to expand its membership from three to five and to create two vice-chair positions, steps members said are intended to support subcommittee work as the board’s workload grows.
At the meeting, Tom Massaro, M.D., nominated Helaine R. Hazlett for chair, saying “the coming year has the potential to be a very important transition period for the Board,” and cited her years of volunteer service and institutional knowledge as qualifications. The board then approved a motion to appoint Hazlett to chair (motion seconded and passed).
After Hazlett accepted the gavel, the board approved motions appointing Tom Massaro as Vice Chair of Community Health and Tom McMahon as Vice Chair of Environmental Protections; both motions were seconded and passed by voice vote. Massaro told the board the additional seats will likely be paired with subcommittees and said the two vice-chair roles are a first step toward that structure.
Massaro also described an operational priority for the coming year: completing long-running work on the town transfer station. He said his prior experience in New Mexico, where public health is more centralized, has given him perspective on the differences with Massachusetts's many local boards. The board deferred a formal review of its mission statement to a future meeting.
